I've always carried an Old Timer. So did my Dad and my Grandfather.

I still have good luck with those.

I bought a small OT hunting knife, it is awesome!

I bought three more like that hunting knife for relatives and they are junk. :(

I guess maybe all the quality control is slipping.

Case and Schrade usually top the list.
My nephew has a Gerber that works well.

This may be superstition or supposition, but it seems the same model/brand

knife bought at a higher end sporting store isn't the same knife bought at Walmart.

Royce..have you tried the sharpener i sent you..if you read the instructions, and use it correctly.. I think you will never use any other sharpener..I have been selling these at shows for many years..awesome tool..hope you are pleased..phil

I've used Old Timers over the years and have several now(different sizes and number of blades). They are definitely better than some. I think you are right about different quality knives being sold at different type stores.
