OT - shoot a bobcat?

Yesterday 4 more chickens killed leaving me only 4 left out of 13 - today saw the culprit bold as brass - big bob cat - first it was up in the next pasture, then heard the rooster making a warning noise and it was sitting just around the corner of the driveway - later it came down and was heading to the the chicken run.
Father in law has a shotgun and a rifle - said we should shoot the darn thing - however I have misgivings about that - not sure if they are endangered or not - might feel even worse about shooting it than loosing the chickens. I wouldnt mind so much if it killed one and took it away to eat but it just killed 4 of them and left them there!!!
Do you think an electric fence would deter it?

Thanks,

lee

Call Fish and Game first, find out if it is endangered. If not, shoot the varmint. If it is, have Fish and Game trap it.

We have had Mountain Lion issues at my home in Hayward and Mountain Lion sitings at the place in Oroville. Fish and Game is the path to getting control of the problem. They have been responsive to the neighbors that called them.

I agree with the Fish and Game idea. It doesn't makes any sense about the killing and leaving. Most cats kill and take away. You may have another problem, like an idiot neighbor dog.

I do not know where you are but here in Missouri it is legal to shoot one if it causes problems I know because I have done so in the past. Endangered NO they are not. But here in MO you do have to take them in and have them tagged to be legal. As for a fence as in electric stopping them maybe if you have a good fencer like the one I have the will kill small bird but the other type I can not say yes or no

Britcheflee,You won't have to worry about him because one more visit tonight and you won't have any chickens left.

Britcheflee .Are you sure it wasn't a Lynx

Should be no Lynx in California. Just remember you can not hunt bobcats with dogs in California anymore. Check hunting regs for rules and season. You probably will never see it again.

You got any fox around there? Knew a guy had a few chickens, he built a six or eight foot high chicken wire fence for a pen for them. Started losing chickens one day. Set up a game camera. Stupid female fox was climbing up the chicken wire and getting in and out of the pen. True story.

We've killed 5 or 6 in a few years time. Bobcats, snakes and coyotes finally ate me out of house and home. I watched em jump the chainlink, grab and go. Chase the birds around the house, thru the pasture or pull the heads of thru the fence night and day. I gave up on raising yardbirds of any type. I seen one bobcat I thought was a mastif one day till he came out of the grass and got a look at its skinny legs. Neighbor verified that he had seen the same one. They are smart but get dumb when hungry. Where there's 1 there's more. Take the carcasses and load the traps. They are hard to trap. Good luck.

I think we have a season on them here in SC. About the most scared I have been was one night when a bobcat screamed 10 feet behind me. Every hair on my body stood up and I am a very hairy guy.

We have a bobcat we see walking by our house here in NH regularly, following an old stone wall.

If we were to shoot it and the word got out, we'd probably be lynched by our neighbors. Besides, we hope it will eat the squirrels.

Well, I have been a bit ------ off for the last couple of days but that made me chuckle and smile....:)

i dont think they are endangered any where, and theres more of them around than most folks think. also im pretty sure theres depredation laws still in effect in most states. back when i was calling coyotes a lot i would call in about as many bobcats as coyotes.your 12 gauge with no 2 or four shot makes a good bobcat load if they are close. call your game dept for info. trapping will work ,but youll be losing chickens until it does. one trick if your using a live trap, get the biggest one you can find. block off the back of it with wire, and use a small live chicken for bait. or take a cage and wire it to the back. bobcats will readily go in a hole if you cover the trap and cage with brush.

Shoot, shovel and shut up. Works for wolves, hawks, owls, wild tomcats, pitbulls, foxes, raccoons, possums, bobcats and any other vermin that wants to kill your chickens. With opposable thumbs and oversized brains, we have domesticated animals, made wire fencing and created guns. Use the tools at hand and win!

love to see all the wild game in my area but they are so many of them. We have had released lots of rattlesnakes from airborne drops, mountain lions, wolves not to mention the coyotes are thick as rabbits and owls eat baby chicks for fun. Still a million times better than being even near a city but to answer question of how to deal with these cats------last week on farm pic. Note known length of rifle then look at size of cat.

thats a fair sized one for sure.my dad shot one years ago that stretched right accross the hood of a old international scout and his legs hung straight down on both sides.everyone who saw it said it was the biggest one they had ever seen. he sold it to a fur buyer, and he swore it was a lynx.but no one knew what a lynx would be doing in okla.

I shoot a lot of varmints...mostly racoons because they break into buildings. I prefer deterrents to let them know they can't just sashay up to the house in broad daylight. Dog or a warning shot. Maybe sting 'em in the arse with a BB gun. If they persist, they need to be culled for acting abnormally. I still like to see the coyote cutting across the back field in the early morning...as long as he is not carrying one of the poultry or barn cats.

Well, maybe the cat is OK. Just leave me one or two.

Wow! Thats a good sized cat - the one I saw looked pretty darn big and it just strolled off up the pasture looking back at me like saying f you....then it came back and just sat for a while in the driveway - if i had a rifle on me I could probably have gotten it - then it just headed over to the chicken house bold as brass - my neighbour said his dogs have been going crazy past few days - I think it is the bobcat because heads still on, no dog could get inside that fence and I saw paw prints - I am ready now so if it comes back.......going to SSS!
