Touch control lever friction disc alternative

Forum Members,
Several months ago I attempted to tighten the nut on the touch control lever. It would not tighten or loosen. Finally cut the nut off and then could not remove the outer plate. It would not budge with a lot of leverage. Wrapped 3/16ths nylon cord to replace the disc as a temporary fix. Finally found a replacement for the disc without wrecking the outer plate and buying a new assembly @ about $30.00. Used a 2 3/8 X 3/16ths O ring. It was a tight fit, but appears to be a good replacement @ $2.50. Any thoughts on this remedy.

I replaced mine about 2 months ago. The nut came off after a good soaking in PB Blaster. Had to use some heat and LOTS of leverage on the plate; I was afraid I would break it but it came off.

If you can get it off a great friction disc can be made from a piece of asphalt shingle. Just use the plate as a template and cut out a donut shaped piece to fit.

I used a 25 yr shingle...guess it should last that long.

Yea I gotta agree with Dean. If you use the control much an O rign isn't going to last long. Other side of the coin is you can keep a stock of O rings and it's a quick cheap fix.

OT,
Thanks for the input!I applied some Liquid Wrench silicone lube on the O-ring this morning to extend its lifetime. It still has a good friction fit. Do not use the 8N in dusty conditions so hope it should last awhile. Will attempt to remove the outer plate if the O-ring does not hold up.

I cut out a piece of gasket material. It was some stuff I had laying around, about 1mm thick, of cork and rubber.

I did my cover a while back and the quadrant shaft was rusty, seems to be a condensation trap. One other thing, there was a washer (spacer) on the shaft betwixt some of the stack, that I forgot and didn't get friction, till I added the washer.

Had a little trouble with the woodruff key also. Ended up making my own. Found the original after the job was buttoned up.

I think Ol Henry got a buy on 7/16" bolts.

i've made them out of thick cork gasket material, boiled leather, and truck mudflap or boot or thick innertube.

but really.. the oe style disc is VERY cheap.. likely you can repalce it once and it will be good for another 5 decades..

I did the same , I was 16 miles from town , no-one
there would have had one either, I would have had
to come home 170 miles & then back again after
ordering , a asphalt shingle works great. Mine too
was 25 years. I still got another probably 250 or
more I could make.

Russ........you complain......"I think Ol Henry got a buy on 7/16" bolts"........actually, Harry/Henry could have use 3/8" bolts but wanted a STRONGER bolt so use 7/16". This was in the days of before strength graded bolts ...ie... grade 2, 5, 8. Strength graded bolts were the result of WW2 production specifications. Most N-bolts are equivalent of today's grade #5 ........historian Dell
