Identifying Front and Rear Main Seals.

I am doing an in frame rebuild of a 1948 8N with a front mount distributor that has been converted to 12 volts.
I purchased a rebuild kit that included the front and rear main seals.
There is no information on which is which. There are two fiber half rings that have a rectangular cross section. There is also two fiber half rings which are kinda oval in cross section.
Which two pieces go in the front seal and what two pieces go in the rear seal ?
Also one end of each piece has been dyed pink. What is this for ?

Smaller (rectangular) is the rear, naturally the other is the front. Not sure about the pink, possibly a sealer. You will probably have to trim them anyway. Both seals are probably rope not fiber.

The I & T manual suggests soaking them for two hours in engine oil. Some posts here also suggest warming the soaking oil.
