I was taking off the manifold today to check for cause of ticking sound.Nut at #4 was turning stud. I've read in archives to drain radiator fluid before removing stud. Do I have to drain the whole radiator? How difficult is it to replace the stud? Any tips? Thank you.

Drain cooling system because the manifold studs can/do go into the water jacket. As for how much I drain it all just to be sure not to loose any and or cause other problems. The stud is a simple stud and easy to replace but you need a tread sealer so the stud does not leak. Also brass nuts help with that problem in the future

just drain it past the manifold levl.

no biggie to put a stud back in... pucky and seat it with a double nut and go..

Just remove the stud and let it drain itself to the level of the manifold. Put a pan or bucket under the engine to catch the old coolant if need be. I doubt you will get more than a couple quarts.

I would just drain the block , put a pail underneath the drain cock loosen the plug.
