1948 8n 12v front coil - need some electrical education

For a 12v system, what solenoid does one purchase? (I added the coil of wire in the starter so now it doesn't crank so fast and bash my ring gear).

Is 7.5V a typical operating voltage?

When I see someone using 7.5v and then dividing by ohms, 2.6 being typically 1ohm resistor and 1.6 coil, they arrive at 2.8 v. I saw a post that said 3.6 was fine, but 4.6 was high. What's the typical operating range?

I wired my solenoid + to the ammeter - and ammeter + to join the alternator and yellow ign. wires. I get no movement out of my ammeter during operation, and none when headlights turned on. I'd think it'd wave all over during operation, or especially during crank...what's up.
 
Don't know the answer to your question but I'd like to know more about adding the coil of wire in the starter..

Difficult work-undoing solder is hard. Old guy up here suggested I do it and it does work-slows the starter down, no banging on the ring gear...
 
6v oe solenoid runs fine on 12v.

it's not a colro tv.. it's an electromagnet... extremely low duty cycle.. etc.

of all my 12v converts.. only 1 or MAYBEE 2 have 12v solenoids.. rest are still running 6v solenoids.

but do what you want.

Couldn't find picture at referenced site. Below is the picture you posted sometime ago, but I never did see information as to where the two shunt coil wires connected. Do you have that connection info? I would WAG, that by the term "shunt", that it connects from the input power stud on one wire & the other to case ground, but hoping for concrete info.

I use the same 6 volt solenoid that was on it, like SoundGuy said.

Yes, for a 6 volt system.

What they're actually doing is taking the running/charging voltage, approx
7.3 and dividing by the resistance of the circuit to come up with operating
current through the coil. i.e. 2.8 Amps, not volts.
Too much current will melt a front mount coil.
 
Have to apologize...don't seem to have kept the pics. Trying to remember. 2 wires came out of the wiring that I attached behind one of the existing coils. Honestly, can't remember how I wired it.
