Something came during the day and got over a 5ft high fence, took a full grown hen and back over the fence with a trail of feathers heading towards the brush - just cant imagine what could do that.

Bloody cold here - main line to septic tank appears to be blocked up - not sure if it is frozen up or coagulated grease - snaked it out but could not reach all the way to the septic tank - so something blocking up about 4 ft from tank or at point pipe enters tank.....or leach field frozen up? Man I hate cold weather.

Amen on Hate the Cold Weather....As my Dad always says at our first cool snap and all through winter-"I"m ready for April".--but who knows? Might still snow in April...

In broad daylight and over a 5 ft. fence sounds like a coyote. Could be a hawk but they usually consume part of the kill at the spot and pull a lot of the feathers out before carrying it off and would probably not leave a trail of feathers.

i've seen coons and possum gut them.. eatthe head and organs and leave a kill...

i've seen hawk partially eatt hem on the spot too...

time for a game camera :)

Funny you should say that - I am off to walmart today to pick up one I ordered - what ever it is is very crafty as I have not seen a darn thing anywhere around.

5 foot high fence only helps keep the birds in but not varmints out if they want in that is. I too have a fence around my chicken pen but I have a hot hot at the top and also once about middle of the fence on the out side. Also to keep hawks etc out I have baler twine running from roof top to top of fence here and there. The idea of that is a hawk or owl will not fly into a place like that since they know they can get hung up trying to get back out

Maybe or7 has moved a bit more south!! OR7 is a wandering wolf from Oregon and is in northern California!!

(quoted from post at 11:58:06 01/15/13) yep.. my pens have netting over the top to keep the hawks and hoot owls out..

I hope to get them through the next few weeks until it warms up again then re-assess what to do to keep them secure. For the moment I have a radio on a talk show to make it sound like someone is there - decided that Rush Limbaugh would be the best to scare those abundant critters off!!!!

Shoot G all you guys get down your way is cool weather LOL . Now if you got up this way I might agree but then this that we are having is still not as cold as I have lived with. Been in the teens at night and maybe up to 30 here during the days

Well since I know what hot weather is and cold here are 2 extremes I have been in. Been up to the arctic circle and also been to Egypt in the summer so yep I know cold and I know hot. Also been in Scotland in Jan. and talk about a cold night standing watch top side on a sub at midnight

'Back in the day' when I had my farm, I had a chicken coop surrounded by 6' high chicken wire (duh) and the top was also covered by same (area 6' x 12'), however there were some gaps between the sides and top and we lost a few hens. One morning a pal that was visiting cried "there is something going on at the chicken coop!!" We went out and found a Great Grey Owl in the enclosure with the remains of one of my layers in his/her fist. My pal jumped in, captured the owl (I had to use a bunch of temp stiches for his effort). End of story is, we kept the Owl for about 3 hrs., gave it a stern talking to and released it - never came back to my knowledge. Boring story, yep. True- yep.

Coons got into my ducks a few years ago and got 2 of them -
they can climb up and over a 5 foot fence unless top is
electrified. Don't have ducks anymore, but have lead poisoned
about 35 coons coming to the bird feeders over the last few
years. We have lots of coyotes also, but I never experienced
them climbing over the fence.

Sounds like a raccoon. I have had that happen, and tracked the varmint home. He/she (probably she) had a nest of kits in a hollow tree.

Raccoons usually kill by chewing the head, eating some, and leaving the rest. However, my experience tells me that when they have kits to feed, they take the kill home. Whether this is too early in the year for them to have young, I don"t know.

I have had coyotes come in small packs and stalk up and down my chicken yard fence, which is about 5". I have never had one come over. I would think it would be hard to carry a full grown chicken back over the fence.

But that doesn"t say it can"t happen.

In my experience, raccoons are the worst of the chicken predators. I don"t have much use for a raccoon.

A couple of nights ago I went out to close up my chicken house, and when I started back to the house, I looked and there was a big raccoon in my vacant dog house, just looking at me like I wasn"t there.

After due deliberation, I went back to the house and got my rife. Yep, he was still there. He is still there. I can"t imagine what happened to him. But the crows are grateful. I have to get around to putting him out in the field.

My $.02

coyote
5' is no problem for them without an angled top, electricity, rollers, etc
make some changes, they know of a food source now

The only daytime bandit I ever had was a Bobcat. They're sneaky little devils.
