Mr. T. Minnesota 01-12-2013 07:37:57 68.170.114.158 Report to Moderator	Forum Members, Thanks for the info of possible solutions on the FEL sudden drop N syndrome. Removed the shifter lever cover and ran the 8N this morning and found fluid gushing all over. First thought it was the piston, but found a large 1/2 by 1/2 inch section of gasket suspended in the mechanism of the top cover. I am going to replace it this morning. Question is, is there something better than picture framing mat board to use as a gasket? The mat board is quite tough. Any thoughts are welcome. Mr. T. Minnesota [Reply]   [No Email]

Minnesota, 01-12-2013 07:37:57   As H-Cooke said get the correct gasket or your going ot be doing it again very soon and it is not fun to do that job. Most any good NH/Ford dealer should have that gasket on hand. Even an O'Reilly's should be able to order you one or this site. What am I going to do with all that mat board stored in the shop?:):) Thought about inserting a modified copper grommet into the oil port opening of the gasket. Just a thought. Have one more theory. Minnesota, 01-12-2013 10:34:49   dry paper oe style gasket.. nothing else. the only other possible mod I would do is have the cover cut for an oring that then sandwiched down onto the deck.. I have seen a fergy with a deck cut oring boss.. etc. still.. I've done plenty N with paper gasket and have never had to go back in as long as the deck and cover were clean and smooth there. remember if you put a metal crush gasket around the port.. the cover will not set true, making the outside of the cover be at a different angle, and thus encourage blow out. the engineers covered this by 1939.. no need to reinvent it.   [Reply]  [No Email]

Just the paper gasket and no sealer. Use some 7/16" bolts with the heads cut off to hold the gasket in place while lowering the top cover into place. I also use a small wedge between the main draft spring and the rear end to hold the cover up while I re-position the control arm.   [Reply]  [No Email]
