Couple of issues- 52 8N

I rarely do much more with my 8N than chores around the house like hauling firewood, scraping the driveway or mowing/bush hogging. Today, I put the dirt scoop on and took it about two miles away to where a pile of gravel had been dumped in a ditch. I had it in 4th gear and we were cruising along very nicely but then the front wheels started wobbling, creating a left/right jerky motion on the steering wheel. After a while it would smooth out but if the road got bumpy it would start up again.

Thoughts?

Also, the Proofmeter needle was jumping around quickly from about 2100 down to 1200 or so. It was hard to tell because it flickered so quickly. This is not a new situation. I noticed it last time I was shredding the meadow.

Judging by sound alone, the Governor seems fine.

Thanks!

How much play do you have in your steering?
Could be tie rod ends, etc getting worn.
I would check the toe in adjustment on the front end too.
The proofmeter sounds like a sticky or broken cable.
You can pull the center cable out of the outer sleeve to clean and check.

Thanks Royse. I'll check that out (Gov Cable) when I get a chance.

Steering has always been very tight. No play in the wheel.

Since it's good and tight, try jacking the front end up and see if anything
wobbles. Tires, wheel bearings, etc. I'd still check the toe in.
Let us know what you find.

When I was a kid (long time ago) we had an 8N that developed the problem you describe. I learned I could stop the front wheel shimmy/wobble on the road in 4th gear by placing the toe of one foot on the tie rod end near my foot and press slightly till the vibration stops. As the old tractor aged, I found myself keeping my foot on the tie rod pretty continually in 4th gear/road travel to prevent the steering system from going into the instability........years later in mechanical engineering school I learned about vibration dampeners, at which time I realized that was what my foot provided to the tractor steering system.
