Hydraulic lift piston

Fighting a hydraulic problem replacing as I go.
Changed the pump, cleaned out sludge and old fluid,
now on hydraulic lift piston. I bought a new piston
with a single o-ring and leather backing ring to
replace the original 3-iron ring piston. Any
suggestion on getting the leather ring into it's
position? Thought about soaking in very hot water to
loosten it to slide on.

Yep. Oring goes toward the oil. Leather backup ring goes on the side away from the oil.

I always soak in warm/hot oil not water. The warm oil makes the leather expand and help lube it when sliding on.

There are 2 types of back up rings. One is made of leather and the other rubber I prefer the rubber ones. Easier to put on and been told they hold up a lot longer

Thanks but I already have the leather as per man. rec. so I'll have to try to use it or wait 2 more weeks for a replacement.

If you end up needing the rubber one, send me your address via e-mail and I will send you one.

(quoted from post at 18:01:04 12/31/12) The leather is per manuf,as it should be a wiper. No?

No - it is not a wiper. It is a backup ring that supports the backside of the o-ring to help prevent extrusion under pressure. The hard rubber or PTFE versions probably work better.

Wait 2 weeks. What don't you have any tractor dealers close to you??. Shoot the last time I got the NAA piston and all I called the dealer and they had them on hand. I could have had it sent for an extra $10 or drive 40 miles one way so I ordered it and had it in 2 days

soak it in hot water. ( real hot ) for 5 minutes.. then lube with some oil.. and then use 2 spoons ( eatin' spoons ) and walk it on like you were beading a tire on a rim..

leather are mostly what I've used. they worked for 50-60 years.. can't be that bad... I HAVE used the rubber ones. they DO go on easier, and have a cup side.. i won't be alive in 50-60 ys to see if they hold up the same as the leather ones.. so don't matter to me.. :)
