"Scrap Metal"

When I was shopping for my 8n this past summer, i called and called about a "Ford Tractor, $1550 obo" that I saw on Craigslist, but could never get together with the seller, who was "real busy" every time I actually got him to answer the phone...

I never even got to see it.

Besides, it turned out that it didn't run,and he wasn't sure what year and model it was, or what was wrong with it anyways....
Then, suddenly, the add just disappeared, (like they do...), which was fine with me, because by then I had moved on to what I felt was a much better tractor anyway, complete with a blade, scoop, chains, plow, and chains, for less money.
And it even actually RAN.

Well, a week or so ago, the add was back, and this time it included "doesn't run, for parts, make offer".

Well, I'm just naturally kinda nosey, had a little time to kill that Saturday afternoon, and am also a parts hoarder, so I called the guy, who for a change wasn't busy, and wound up driving about 10 miles to have a look.
Besides, I had delivered a sign that morning and the trailer was still hooked to the back of the pickup....

THIS is what I found.....

It's a 40 9n, the engine spun over right then and there with the 6v starter, lights worked, tires as good as my own tractor, and the tin is actually much nicer than my 8n. The grill was leaning against the front tire.
There was nice green anti freeze in the radiator, none in the oil, and the steering nice and snug, box, tie rods and all.
The tractor just " up and quit" one day early last spring, and his buddy who is "pretty good with cars and stuff' couldn't figure out what was wrong with it, so he left it sit by the tree where it died and went out and
bought himself a bright shiny 4WD 3 cylinder diesel "appliance" to replace it... and there it sat all summer and fall.

When it came down to dealing for $$$$, the gentleman sternly said what he was told he could get for it for "scrap metal" price, and swore he wouldn't take a PENNY LESS!!!!!!

I wrote the man a check, and he helped load it on my trailer with his new "appliance".
I shook his hand and he was smiling as he said how happy his wife was going to be to have that "junk" gone, and he waved as I drove away.

I got it home and pulled the plugs just to make sure all the holes had compression... Good to go.
Over the weekend I'm gonna take it in the shop and figure out if it's an ignition issue or fuel one, and try to get it fired up.

I just hope I didn't waste the $400 I paid for it.

Sure looks like a good buy for $400. Keep us posted.

Thanks for your comments, Gentlemen.
I'm unsure just how far I'm going to go with the 9....
RIght at the moment I have it, a Case that I wound up with in a trade and my 8n , which is going to be with me forever because my 2 1/2 year old grandson, who was with me when I bought it, has claims as HIS 'Red belly tractor".
Sometime in the next day or two, I'm headed down country to buy the tractor that I REALLY want, a 57 860, so the Case and the 9 are gonna have to go....

I guess when I got the chance to get back into tractors, I kinda got carried away.

If anyone might be interested in the Case, drop me a line. It's listed in the classified here.

Just send me an e-mail and yes I can. If on classic just click on send e-mail and if on modern just click on my handle and you can send me an e-mail. O can not send it to you with out you sending me one first since I can not d oa copy paste thing

Only keeping 2 tractors??? Shoot I would be lost if I did not have at the very least 5 tractors. As it is I have close to 30 of them. Ya the do not all run but sure better then them going to China

I'm squeeling on you!!!! My wife complains about my "umteen" tractors, down from 23. We (grandkids and I) don't tell grandma what is in the barn or out back, more than 10, less than 20. She never seems to be impressed when I say someone has more than me.

My wife learned years ago that if I have them if things go bad I can always find some $$ if need be but if you do not have them then if you need some $$ your screwed blued and tattooed and you do not have a paddle so your up a creek LOL

Sure when I retired I looked at what things where doing and invested in old tractors since I saw the stock market and all was not going to make any $$ but I figured you can always sell a tractor and if you repair them then you are ahead. Buy cheap fix them and sell at a profit LOL
