$48 8N starting problem

My tractor turns over fine, starts, runs maybe 10 seconds, kills, and I restart, same thing, happens half a dozen times and then runs fine. Local yokel overhauled it for me this summer,so engine should be in good shape.

Ignition switch going bad will do that as will a little dirt in the carb. Check spark as in you need a blue white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap. Also pull the carb drain plug and let gas flow for a few minutes. Catch it so as to look for water/dirt etc in the gas. Also try a jump wire across the ignition switch

I had a similar problem several weeks ago. Make sure you have good blue-white spark that will jump a 1/4" gap (I did). Make sure yuou still have spark as it dies. Make sure gas will flow thru the bottom of the carb for a least 2 min (mine did). Eliminate the ignition switch as a problem by jumping around it. (not my problem). If those three tests have not led you to a solution, then I would give the carb an overnight soaking in carb cleaner and blow all the passages out with compressed air. That solved my problem. Good luck and report back.

My "48 did the same thing AFTER I put in a new key switch. I put a test light between the switch and coil and found out the key needed to be jiggled until it found a spot it was happy enough with to let power through. A little contact cleaner fixed this problem for the most part. It still creeps up every once in a while; but, I"ll live with it until it gets warm again.
I"d mount a temporary light to see if this is your problem.
