Finally done

I've been griping about this charging thing for too long. With no good regulators around I finally decided to convert to 12 volts.

All of my Farmalls have alternators - Delco and Hitachi. I took the gen off the 8N to hold up both models and see which one I wanted for it. The Delco seemed like an easy one and could make a bracket without firing up the welder.

Bought a Delco for it and a 12 volt coil and switched it out. Got it all done, fired it up, and THE IDIOT LIGHT STAYED ON. Had to be either the alternator or the wires I used (I used the field and armature wires for the connections.

Took the alt off and took it to town. Sure enough, the alt I just bought was no good. Seemed pretty poetic considering the workbench had 5 regulators sitting on it that didn't work either.

Traded it out and all works well. It is shocking how fast that little engine fires up on 12 volt. No more growling over a few times and starting.

P.s. not sure whether it was soundguy or old, but someone mentioned wiring the 6 volt lights in series to use them until one blows. Not sure how I didn't think of that but it works just great. Paired those with a 12 volt one from a Farmall for the back light and we are good to go!

EVERY tractor on the farm is now 12 volt. Strange how good that feels. No more constantly watching ammeters waiting for the other shoe to drop!

The problem with series wiring is when one blows you are with out any lights. Yes works fin till then. Or you can always use a O'Reilly's VR-1 ballast resister in the wire to the light and do the same thing and not likely to blow the resister LOL. I know to many ways to get around things but then being a former Navy E.T. you learn thing. Shoot i have forgotten more then a lot ever learn about what I call Zap-U-Trons. Thing like an-gates or Nor-gates nan-gates etc etc All electronic terms by the way

onverting to 12v was the best move I ever made. I made my own mounts, wired the lights in series, replaced the ampere meter with volt meter all for less than the price of my two dead VR. The 8N starts fast now without using the cough and I can run 12v sprayer with it.

I agree , first thing I do when I get a new tractor is change to 12 volt, it just makes everything so much easier and I think better.

I started out as a Navy E.T. Electronics tec that is on a sub the USSBN Caismier Pulaski 633 then since I could not handle being under and who knows where for some 70 plus days I managed to get off of it and then ended up on the JFK CVA67 aircraft carrier as a electronics tec and repaired the flight deck radio system which pretty much was a simple walkies talkie system so the guys on the flight deck could communicate with the flight boss

I started out on the big black never come backs but got transferred to a flat top USSBN 633 and then the CVA67
