spindle inside spacing or bearings

Forum Members,
I have noticed the right front tire on my '47 8N runs very close to the axle extension. The left tire has a spacing of about 3/4 inch. The right side is about 1/4 inch away from the axle extension. Have also noticed the left hub is spaced out about 3/8 of an inch from the spindle assembly. The right hub is just about touching the spindle assembly. Is this a seal, wheel bearing, or worn spindle problem? Is there a minimum spindle diameter that should be present so this does not happen? I could check that. Not sure how to check for worn bearings. The wheel spins on the axle smoothly. Hope this was explained correctly.
Any help is appreciated!

Jack it up and rock the tire back and forth at 12 and 6. Where the movement is coming from should be easily spotted.

A-guy,
There is no "play" vertically or horizontally. That was one of the first things I checked. I have also checked for play within the axle extension. There was no play there either.
As Soundguy suggested I have very worn bearings. An added observation is that the nut holding in the hub looked modified for some reason. Will do as Soundguy suggested and replace the bearings.

I must have misunderstood the post. I have never seen a difference in spacing being that much and yet have no play in the bearings.
