SO; What is the B.H.P of an 8N?

You ask someone what the horse power is of an 8N tractor. You
get a reply like 'At what point are you talking about?'
Here what I copied from another page:
Drawbar (claimed): 23.16 hp [17.3 kW]
PTO (claimed): 27.32 hp [20.4 kW]
Drawbar (tested): 21.95 hp [16.4 kW]
PTO (tested): 23.24 hp [17.3 kW]
Belt (tested): 25.77 hp
When I go buy a lawn mower I can buy the cheaper 3hp or pay a
little more and buy the 5hp.
No questing like will if you want self propelled it has less horse
power even thought there the same motor. I got my new
Hercules motor in Friday. It says on the tag it's Horse Power is
B.H.P. 29.6
Did a little research and found,
1) "Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's
horsepower before the loss in power caused by the gearbox,
alternator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary
components such as power steering pump, muffled exhaust
system, etc.
2) One boiler horsepower unit, or (BHP), is equal to a boiler
thermal output of 33,475 Btu/h (9.811 kW), which is the energy
rate needed to evaporate 34.5 lb (15.65 kg) of water at 212 °F
(100 °C) in one hour. The unit is not current outside of North
America.
Seems it make a difference if the letters are Capital or lower
case.
Mine are Capital.
So what would the B.H.P. and /or the b.h.p. of an 8N be?

No one on the Oliver page could tell my for sure. What are those two port in the bottom of the oil pan?
Best guess was that it for an independent water line to run heat to the cab.
Any body know for sure what it is?

The most trusted source of farm tractor performance data is the NE tractor tests.

The Ford 8N was tested three times at the NE tests (4 if you include the 8NAN, which I will ignore), tests Number 385, 09/08/47 - 09/19/47; 393, 05/11/48 - 05-18-48; and 443, 06/16/50 - 16/27/50. Maximum belt/PTO HP figures were 21.06, 22.57 and 25.49, respectively while drawbar HP figures were 13.62, 17.43, and 17.65.

Note: According to the NE data, the 8N was rated at 1750 RPM for drawbar use and 2000 RPM on the belt at the time. Performance date was taken at rated RPM.

That engine appears to be a military unit am I right??? If so I hope for your sake it is a common one not one that is a mil spec unit because if mil spec parts can be harder to find then hens teeth.
Been decades since I have heard of a person talk about Brake Horse power. Back when I go my first drivers license the state I lived in had a law that let some one at 14 get a motorcycle license if the motorcycle was 5BHP or less and at the time Honda had 3 or 4 and the one I had was a 1967 Honda 50 wish I still had it and a few others I had at one time like a Triumph Tiger 200 1959 model

If that is in fact a Military type engine those could be to run water into and out of to warm the engine up for easy starting. Made it easy to hook up a couple hoses heat water over a fire and then pour the water in and back out on the ground

That's a new theory. You might be right I don't believe it's an oil cooler. Don't seem it would work very good to the heat a cab.
Still want to find someone that knows for sure.

Also could be an easy way to use a couple rods to have 4 guys lift the engine in and out of a machine. So is that an old Military engine??? If YES then that does add some off the wall reason for those wholes since the Military has and does many odd off the wall things that some times make little or no sense LOL

Yes, it's a Military engine. The block looks to be the same as my old engine. I'll need to use my old Bell Housing since the starter is to low on this one. So I'll have to move the oil canister or use the one off my old engine which is the screw on type filter. All the same ports are there as on my old engine. Has a lifting eye on the head for lifting it. I can use any thing that was on my old engine on this block from what I can tell. So I don't see where I would run into problems. You are the second one to say they will be internally different. The other guy didn't reply when asked how. What would the be? Crank turned to different dementions, Rods heaver duty. Different cam? or what. I can't see how this engine will be any different than the one that was in it other than a little larger bore size.

Could be little or nothing different to it or could be a lot of stuff. When you deal with something that was Military you run into what is called Mil spec and if that is so which it may or may not be depending on the age of the engine. Mil spec stuff causes some very odd and off the wall things that have to meet specs made just for the military and believe me even hammers can have to meet mil spec and believe it or not toilet seats
