Notjustair 12-30-2012 16:35:56 174.229.72.196 Report to Moderator	Voltage regulators!! My 8N is the only thing that is 6 volt left on the farm. It is kind of a point of pride that it still starts just fine and works just fine. All except for these cheapo voltage regulators! We are suppose to get measurable snow starting at 6 in the morning. I had the 8N out today moving some rock. All was well. That is, of course, until I started it to put it back in the shed. Waited for the ammeter to swing over after it started. Nothing. The regulator that is in there is about a year old. Finding one that lasted longer than 10 minutes at the time nearly made me bonkers. That whole mess is the reason I get a little sick to my stomach every time I see an ammeter. In all honesty I think it took three regulators to get it to work reliably back then. There is always some reason why I don't convert it. When I had the gen rebuilt last year it was because the 6 volt battery was nearly new. Now I will spend 30 bucks on a regulator because I paid $100 to get the generator rebuilt a year ago. There is always some reason it my tight brain. So I will head to town tomorrow in the snow to get a new regulator and hope this one courtesy of China lasts more than 10 minutes. If I see an 8n sitting by the road I might just buy the whole tractor if it has an original regulator on it. You know, when we built things here and meant them to last. Rant over. I am thinking your VR is fine and that you possibly have a bum wiring issue. Usually new VRs require no adjusting out of the box. If you go to the other Ford Tractor web site, they have most all wiring configs in downloadable pdfs. If you do not know about teh web site -email me for the link. They won't let me post it here. Anyway, did you polarize the generator after installing all those new parts? Whenever you disconnect the battery and then hook it back up, polarize the generator. Also, most reputable starter/alternator shops will bech test all your components FREE. You can take your battery, generator, coil, ammeter, and VR to them and they will test and if all is good tweak everything just right. That means the VR if needed, and the third brush if your genny has one. Then don't muck with the settings. To reinstall, mount all components, but leave battery connections last. Get the wiring connected, then double and triple check it for correctness. Like I said, it sounds like your wiring is incorrect. I'm not critricizing nor questionng your abilities, it's just a possibilty and we all make mistakes, no matter how many times we have done a job. email me... Tim Daley(MI) [Reply]  [No Email]

I have noticed, on some things, that there are one or two really weird things done almost to sabotage the product. I have a welder and one of the capacitors was connected to ground by the screw that holds one of the rubber feet. Really weird. Similar on some cast iron shop equiptment, basic good design and some weird part that is just barely functional, just fix that and things are ok, sometimes. Its hard to know if there are any obvious things that can be easily fixed in the poster's regulator. fwiw [Reply]  [No Email]
