2n starter

Have got my thousand-dollar 2N running fine and plowing snow like a champ after 12Vconversion, new govenor, carb rebuild and tune up. Of course I have a list of projects but she does the job. Maybe someone can advise about one issue. The original starter works fine with the 12 v system but it seems to sensitive. It disengages from the fly wheel gear with only a single firing of a single piston sometimes. Would a new bendix help? Thanks.

The starters on both my 8N and 660 kicked out too quickly, especially once I converted to 12V. Both had the "Old Style" drives. I put in "New Style" starter drives (Bendix) and that fixed the problem. Well worth the price.

It may help or it may not. Seen that type of thing happen with many machines and it was not the starter Bendex but some other small adjustment like timing or carb or some other odd thing not just right. Check you points and make sure they are set at 0.015 and you get that at all 4 lobes. But yes it could also be the Bendex but it may not be either. I have a car that does the same thing and has since I owned it and I know it is not the starter that causes it but the cold weather. This car will not start in cold weather unless we have a light under the hood at night

You may have an original bendix which works as you described. The new style bendix the others are referring to is a follow through type which will stay engaged with the flywheel until the engine starts due to having spring loaded dogs that lock in until the engine starts and the centrifugal force overcomes the springs to allow it to disengage.

a tune up AND a new bendix maybee.

hitting on one cyl and stumbling to life is not as ideal as simply 'starting up'

I have the same issue with my early 8N. Just a single "putt" and it kicks out. Will try the bendix fix when i tear into it in the spring (need it for snow and no good place to put it inside to work on it in the cold). Thanks for the tip, you often help more than just the person asking!
