starter bendix broke apart

my starter bendix has broke apart and I can't remove the remaining part from the starter shaft.
the end of the barrel that the shaft slides through is sheared off and some of the parts have fallen down into the bellhousing.
any ideas how to get remaining part off of the shaft? I will appreciate any info.

Were you able to get the pin out that is supposed to hold it on?

Are you saying that you have the starter out ? If so, just take the appropriate mallet and bash the offending 'pin' out. 'N' fords were invented about 2 hrs. after the 'wheel'. NO rocket science or major thinking involved. Farmers 'in the day' replaced mules, their wives & kids with the fantastic 'TRACTOR" (gas costed about 2C a gallon and was cheaper than feeding the above). HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!

I didn't get the pin back. I think that it was the only thing that fell down into the bellhousing.
The barrel that the pin goes through is the part that sheared off near the gear.

that pin is the entire enchilada.. get it out and you are free.

if you wish you can use a flexi 3-jaw grabber or magnet stick picker upper to fish parts out..

I don't think that I am explaining my problem correctly. I wish that I were computer savvy enough to add a picture but I am not.
I am going to close this post and study how to send a photograph and then come back for help.

Maybe this will help a bit.

There are two types of Bendix, the new style on the right and the old-original style on the left.

You probably have the old style with a spring.

To remove the Bendix you have to compress the Bendix back toward the start and remove the pin #20.

I use two bar clamps place around the starter and over the end of the Bendix. A third clamp will hold the two clamps on the Bendix if they start to slide off. You only need to push the Bendix back about 1/8". Then you can tap the pin out with a drift. Once the pin is out, remove the clamps and the Bendix will slide off. Reverse to install.

Had the same problem last winter. Went fishing with a magnet. Found my part wasn't the only part that had sheared off. So if you don't find yours it may be OK to leave it.
