Front bumper modifications

Just wanted to share an idea.

Happy New Year to all, in spite of the way the world is around us.

Greg

Here is the finishing touch being done to the front bumper to drill holes on the uprights for brackets.
The brackets will be modified stay straps to stabilize a carry rack for the 2" square tube receiver mount.

I didn't feel like removing the bumper and go to the drill press to drill 1/2" holes.
So I borrowed the magnetic base drill from work.

Greg,

Like the idea. Have a 4X2 foot carrier that attaches to my suv receiver and that could be put on the front end of the 8N.
What kind of drill set up is that? Thought I had just about every tool out there, but your drill is different than anything I own. Looks like a two part slide system.
Curious??

It's a mag-drill. Magnetic base allows you to set it up on a steel surface like a miniature drill press. Beats the heck out of hand held drilling larger holes.

I don't blame you at all for using a cherry picker to mount that drill. We have several of those drills where I work and I know how heavy they are to move around! Good idea but I would be careful of overloading so you don't bend the bumper mounts if your driving over rough ground. My 2 cents worth Greg NE

Thanks for the warning.
I just can't 't live with the slop in that tube with a 5' carrier width.

The aluminum flat bar is for finding the right bend angles before I prepare the stay strap ends.
I don't have any use for those stay straps so here I go.
You know I'm tired of not having anywhere to carry stuff when an implement is on the back and in tight spaces that prevents a trailer on the front.

Happy New Year,

Greg

Your comment on the slop in the hitch reminded me that there are inexpensive accessories on the market designed help reduce the slop. I thought about getting one but haven"t gotten around to it yet. Here"s one example in the link. There are other designs. I haven"t used it myself so I can"t vouch for how well it works.

FarmerBlair,

Thanks for the good info.
I'll probably get one and also use the stay straps.
That's a 5' span and the angle framing is maybe 1/16" to an 1/8". I'd hate to bend the hec out of it with a little weight out at the ends.

Happy New Year,

Greg

I note the number plate with the Arabic numerals on it - where would that be from?
