861 Fuel Filter

Hope I am not asking a dumb question.....but it wouldn"t be
the first time.....I had a heck of a time getting the round
retainer off of my 861 Diesel fuel filter canister ...I damn near stopped to fashion a tool....Finally got if off......Misplaced my big set of channellocks...Any thoughts.....suggestions...techniques??
