Alligator clip belt repair

Anyone ever do their own repair to a flat belt
using Alligator clips ? I bought this belt some
time ago for my cordwood saw but never tried it
yet , but intend on doing this summer. How
difficult is it to make this work? I've watched
videos on it , looks like cutting it square and
then using a hammer to complete.

Did that operation this past fall. The alligator clips were of the wire variety. There is a device that helps align the wire clips together and makes it an easy process. If you have the wire or other larger clip variety, make sure you are hammering with a mid sized hammer and on a fairly heavy flat anvil type block. I happen to have part of a railroad track bolted to a large bench. Another hint is to use a mid weight weed wacker line to run between the clips, not metal because they wear out the clips faster. Weed wacker line is a lot cheaper than raw hide too.

The "alligator belt lacing" is usually done with a "Belt lacing device" that looks like a short vise, connected at the bottom pivot (just like an alligators hinged mouth). some fit in a bench vise, other are poundable type. These devices hold the "alligator clips" in line, by the use of a steel removable pin thru them. Most also hold the clips at the right depth to the belt. Both ends of the belt are done with this device and then a nylon pin (doubled over at ends, so it doesn"t slide out)holds the intermeshing alligator clips together.
You can probably buy one of these "Belt lacing devices" by searching on line, but I would recommend that you contact your nearest Gas and steam club (or members" to borrow one,
