Son and I just "fixed" 12v conversion on a '40 9N. Been running it off the battery just to move it around the yard. Used to run for 2-3 days before we had to charge the battery, now only runs 5 minutes or so. Battery charges back to full in a short time. Suggestions?

vtgus.........take yer alternator into an autoparts store for "free" checkout. Meanwhile DISCONNECT yer battery. They don't like to be shorted out and will WARP the plates and you will haffta buy a NEW battery. (it probably already has WARPED plates) There is NO external check for warped plates, byte the bullet and but NEW battery .........Dell

isconnect your "fix" and see if it returns to its old ways.

Hey soundguy. Battery isn't charging cuz the alternator isn't hooked.up. We had the battery directly connected to get spark farmer across the road has an older Case that he runs like that because he hasn't fixed the alternator yet. It worked for us for a while.

I've got an 8N that I use maybe 4 times a year. Installed a cheap $5.00 battery switch from H Freight (not too proud of that though). Turn the sw off every time I park it and have never had to charge the battery in three years now. Same thing with a 1950 J Deere M which I restored. Call me a beleiver in battery switches.... Just sayin. EGBinOR

Battery is going bad or you have a short some place in the system. All it takes is one hungry mouse to cause a short and it can happen over night. Also make sure the starter is not running on as in a sticking solenoid if it ha one or the starter switch sticking

I'm not sure what model Case your neighbor has, but if it is magneto fired
it will run without even having a battery in it. Your 9N won't.
If you can provide us a little more info as SoundGuy said, we can help.
You know it's not charging because the alternator is not hooked up. Correct?
So it's running off the battery all the while it's running.
That will work for a while, but eventually will kill the battery.

Batteries have a reserve capacity of more than five minutes if properly charged. " charges back to full in a short time". You may be reading a surface charge which doesn't mean the battery is fully charged. Sounds like your battery needs to be fully charged and load tested. Don't try to charge it if it's frozen, let it thaw first.
