12V Need Help

Merry Christmas to all...I hope all your holidays are full of joy.

I've been working on a 50 front mount that was converted when we bought it. The motor was locked and it didn't run. Just finished the motor and have no spark.

I replaced the wiring per JMORs diagram for a Delco 1 wire alt, minus the lights. I have 12 volts to coil with key on, 0 key off. 12 volts to points with key on and 12 volts to breaker plate with points closed. 12 volts to secondary with points open about 2 with points closed.

I have tried two set of points and two condensers with no change. The ballast glows red hot with points closed, but not with points open. Im at a loss, any help is appreciated.

Check to make sure your point gap is correct. Front mount is 0.015. If you open the points by hand you should both hear ans see a spark at the points. No spark means dirty points. You could also have a bad condenser which would also cause no spark

Thanks Old. Points gap was set it .015. I will pickup both tomorrow and recheck as neither set I tried was new. Should my ballast get that hot!?!?

Do the plugs fire on points open or closed, just so I know???

A ballast resister as any resister will get hot and some so hot you will get burned if you touch it. The spark fires as the points open and when close the coil builds up current to then cause the spark as the points open
