What is it??

Have a slight problem,an 8N front mount,12 volt that I bought recently, when I try to hook the positive cable to the battery the starter turns over,so I,m thinking its possibly the selinoid, or the switch or what else could it be, in need of some guideance, thanks, dumb guy from pa.

First thing I would check is to see if the wire running to the starter button has shorted to ground somehow, or that the starter button was fully disengaged. Starter turns when it is grounded, I wouldn't think it was the solenoid. Someone with more detailed troubleshooting will probably post and help you out.

Assuming you have the correct 3 post solenoid still hooked up to the push button,
disconnect the little wire.
The one from the push button to the small terminal on the solenoid.
Does it still do it?
If not, that small wire may have rubbed somewhere and grounded out,
or you could have a bad switch.
If it does, you may have a stuck solenoid. Sometimes they'll unstick
if you rap them with a screwdriver handle.
Let us know what you find.

John........yer starter mounted 3-terminal solenoid is operated by GROUNDING the BIG thumb switch by yer tranny shifter. The little middle terminal should face yer tranny. Most likely yer big CLODD-HOPPERS kicked the solenoid wire where it goes thru the bottom of yer sheetmetal dashboard. Don't fight it, byte the bullet and REPLACE it with NEW 14ga stranded INSULATED (enny color, electrons don't care about color) wire with correct terminals. Simple, eh? .......Dell, a 12V advocate for the right reasons

Ok, just came back from garage, checked wire from push button to selinoid, one spot was rubbed thru but not touching any where that I could see,so decided to replace wire as Dell sugested, still no help so taped the top of selinoid with a small hammer like Royse suggested, guess what it worked some times, think I will just replace the selinoid, thanks to everyone for all the suggestions, this is great site, John from Pa

Sounds like you found it. Buy a good replacement solenoid.
I've had that happen a couple of times on cheap ones like from TSC, etc.
