Ford 8N Sputtering Problem

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I went out to plow the 10 inches of snow that we got yesterday and pulled the tractor out of the heated shop and it worked for about 1 minute and began to sputter/die out and would completely quit. The tractor would restart and work again for a few minutes and then sputter and die out. After letting it rest for several minutes it would run fine for a minutes and again die out. I changed the spark plugs thinking that the plugs were fouling. It didn"t make a difference. I checked the fuel - no apparent problem. It was still snowing when I was out and seems to be a problem with the electric system - coil or points. I plowed a week earlier with it and it ran like a champ. Any direction/advice would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Sounds to me like one or more of your fuel filter screens is/are plugged up. Take the plug out of the carburetor drain and measure fuel flow into a can for a couple minutes. If it starts to flow well but slows to a drip or trickle, start checking and cleaning screens; you can also try opening the fuel shutoff valve all the way if it is currently at 2turns open, to see if that helps. Report what you observe in this effort.

Where are the filters/screens? I thought the sediment bowl was the only filter/screen. I did make sure that the valve was turned open far enough (that I didn't just crack it). I can check to see if opening it further than normal helps at all and will check the flow of fuel from the carb.

There are three screens.
The one in the sediment bowl that you mentioned.
One in the elbow where it goes into the carb, and
one on top of the sediment bowl assembly in the tank.
If fuel flow turns out to be the problem.

j_eich18.......while yer problem could be fuel related, from yer description; 1-min run, restart after few minutes of cool down, I would replace the BAD condenser. BTW, condensers can be BAD right outta the box. ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Pull the carb drain plug and catch the gas. You should have a good steady flow of gas there for say 5 minutes. Look at the gas and make sure it is not full of rust or dirt or water. If you do not have a good flow there work you way back till you find where it is clogged up. As for the screens there should be one at the carb elbow, one in the top of the sediment bowl and one in the tank. Also make sure you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
Also telling us if it is a front or side mount and if 6 or 12 volts helps us help you

Make sure since it is a front mount that you have all 4 gaskets in the distributor and also make sure you do not have a wet distributor since the fan loves to pick up and blow snow back and that will cause you odd problems

UPDATE - So I tore into the fuel line to investigate the screens and the screen in the tank was covered. I cleaned the screen and got the fuel flowing again. In the process I had the carb apart to clean it and I am afraid that I need to reset the jets because the tractor stumbles under a load now. So I fixed one problem but now have another one. I am sure someone has written on how to adjust the carb so, if possible, please point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Idle adjustment set to 1-1/2 turns out that is the one close to where it bolts on the manifold. The main jet adjustment the one that sits pointing down set to 2 turns out. That is just a starting point so you have to adjust it so as to find a sweet spot. Same say to adjust it as so and so and leave it but I do not agree with that
