2N, 6Volt--in neutral-key off----starter should turn over, just has no fire to coil--is that correct..Dad called don"t know why he was messing with his 2N with key off but he thought it wasn"t suppose to turn the starter with the key off..He wanted to hear it from ya"ll..Tks

ell him that he has heard from us? and we? agree with you.

explain it to him like this.

the starter button on a 2n is mechanical.. and presses a bit of copper against other copper.. one from the battery, one to the starter.. ;)

Yes it will turn over, nothing to prevent it.
Hope he doesn't run the battery dead wondering why it won't
start before he realizes he didn't turn the key on. Don't ask. LOL

Thanks everyone--he is happy now and understands that nothing is wrong with his key switch. He was ready to go get another one tomorrow.

Tractor is kinda new to him-he's only had it and used it regularly for 45 years..I guess it is just one of those things where you(he) has always done exactly the same thing every time-put in neutral, turn on key, press starter button and fan the choke..has always cranked before it turns over good....anyway, today I think he got Out Of Sequence somehow and discovered that the engine turns over with the push button starter no matter if the key is on or off...Just goes to show, we never get too old to learn new things--Hope I am still as sharp as he is when I'm his age..He is 80. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I believe it happens to all of us.
Maybe more as we get a little older.
I wish him many more years safely using his 2N.

Lets hope that when we are 80, we only make small mistakes like that. All the best for the Season to you , your Dad and family. b P.S. 80 ain't THAT far away!

Thanks Royse -- You are right. I know I forget lots of things and I lack about 21 yrs being as old as he is...
