9N Hydraulics not lowering

Got my Dad's 42 9N back after some time and putting some investment into it (new sleeves along with 12V conversion) to get it running good. But running it, there appears to be a hydraulic issue. The Hydraulics goes up and is at full tension, it does not appear to want to come down. So looking through previous post and seeing a Zane comment about a 8N potentially a Exhaust valve. The oil is low currently and I dont"t think it has been changed (at least not within the last 30 years) so should the cleaning take care of it? It did sit for some time so (I will check this with an inspection).

so should the cleaning take care of it?
It won't hurt. Except maybe the wallet.
When I got my 2N the hydraulics would stick all the way up and not come
down until I shut the tractor off for a while, then they would just fall.
I cleaned it all up, put new fluid in it and worked it.
Haven't had that problem return for over a year and a half now.
YMMV and it's a ~$50 gamble!

The 9N has the Ferguson System. You may have a stuck control valve. Open the hydraulic comapartment access plate and reach in the oil and pull back on the "T" shaped control valve stem and see if it drops. DO NOT STICK YOU HANDS IN THE COMPARTMENT IF THE ENGINE IS RUNNING AND THE PTO IS CONNECTED!

Mine 8N did pretty much the same thing. Exhaust valve was stuck. I pulled the pump, freed up the exhaust valve, replaced the safety valve and reinstalled the pump with a new gasket. works great now.

My lift would stick in the up position in my Ferguson. I replaced the control valve and it fixed it. Even though my old control valve was in good shape at some point in its life water had got into the hydraulic pump and had caused some very small pits and discoloration in the surface of the control valve. Believe it or not that will cause it to stick. If the control valve doesn"t have a smooth almost mirror finish to it, it will stick. Sometimes you can use a metal polish and buff it back up but dont sand it that will make it worse. Also if the spring that hooks from the control fork to the lift cylinder is broken or stretched really bad it can cause the lift to stick in the up position. But its usually the control valve or a stuck valve in the pump that causes it.

The 9N does not have a separate exhaust valve like an 8N. The OEM 2N and the 9N use the Ferguson System and the 8N uses a different control scheme.

I just got my 40 9N running too and I had the same problem. After sitting still for 20 years I assumed it was a stuck valve. When I shut it down the back blade would eventually drop to the ground, usually overnight. I went out to mess with it today and lifted the control lever just enough to start the blade up, then dropped it again. I did that 10 or 12 times and everything freed up! I used the blade for about an hour afterward and it worked perfectly. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Maybe you'll be lucky too. I do plan to change the fluid now.
