You guys nailed it; axle splines are past the hub face. first surprise: got the 2 inch socket breaker bar and ext pipes to break the nut loose it came off with small force on the bar alone. nowhere near 450 lbs. second surprise: jacked it up thinking if it was in that far i could rock it loose instead of doing figure 8's / hub puller / heat. i lucked out and it worked which tells me it really was not tight anyhow.

as long as i'll need the hub what else should i change while its apart? axle is hard so it should be ok? not getting any leakage so seals should be good. will i need to reshim the axle bearings? don't want to be going back into this in a year or two. thanks.

emoving & replacing the axle shims does not alter the bearing shim/tightness/looseness.....unaffected.

Don't be surprised if the axles are worn out ... I have never seen were a hub was flopping around that did not ware the axle also...

Agreed.

Perhaps you can get away with replacing the hub only but you will not know until you install a new hub.

Undersized hubs were once sold by Ford in several undersizes for situations such as this but these have been NLA for 25 years or more.

Both my hubs were worn as bad as yours and axles were ok. If the axle is bad I would try the shim trick before buying an axle, but that's just me I'm cheap.

get the hub for now.

if you are lucky and the axle is not worn.. or not worn enough to make a difference.. you are at least good to go there. past that.. IF the axle is worn.. then you can burn that bridge when you see them splines on splines..

yes just getting a hub for now. i do respect the expirienced opinoins offered no doubt the axle could be a factor. hardened does not mean invincible.i'll know once it comes apart and i have the new hub in hand. maybe this weeknd i'll get my 2 hour brake job done. thanks again to all.

that's how them 2hr jobs happen. open something easy up and see thet 99% has to come apart.. :)
