I had to pull my 8n starter and now that I have replaced it it spins great but won"t engage the ring gear. So I will pull it again. Does anyone have any ideas what I should look for ?
I sure would appreciate any info. Thanks in advance.

I look at the ring gear and make sure it is not just spinning on the flywheel.

Before you pull the starter, make sure your battery is fully charged. You need a strong battery to:

1. Close the solenoid

2. Spin the starter

3. Engage the bendix

4. Provide voltage to the coil.

As the battery gets weaker, the first thing to fail is your spark. If the battery is almost totally dead, all you will hear is the solenoid clicking. Your battery could have just enough current to spin the starter but not enough to engage the bendix.

If that's not the problem, it could be a dirty shaft (clean it w/ brake cleaner & don't lube it) of a bad ring gear (loose or missing teeth)

Loren........yer Bendix drive gear must be SQUEAKY clean. Clean with brake cleaner. Just pull yer 8-in screws out and DROWN the Bendix gear with squirt'em straw. Simple, eh? Don't worry about flooding yer tranny housing, that is why there are 2-cotterkey drains. ........Dell

Just an addition to the good advice you've already been given, make sure
you have the proper size cables and that all the connections are clean and tight.
Specially if this is still a 6 volt system, regular old car cables aren't big enough.

as has been said. make sure the electrical conenctions are good and clean and bat is well charged to spin her good.

next make sure bendix and shaft are clean and free of grease and wet lubes that can cause drag.

make sur ehte ring gear teeth are good, and that the ring gear is not spinning on the flywheel

One time my FORD VAN gave u[p starting in a local grocery store parking lot.

I had to go to the court house and use a public phone to call AAA.

The operator of the AAA asked me what was wrong with the van. I says "she has a BUSTED BENDIX"

The operator said "CALL 911, not US".

True Story.
