HCooke--stumped

Not running yet. So far I have swapped the dist from a running tractor; I have swapped the carb from a running tractor; I have swapped manifolds. I replaced the manifold gaskets. I removed the valve cover gasket and observed the valves moving up and down - looked normal to me. I have hotwired the coil (bypassing the switch and the resistor). I have removed the exhaust pipe. I will run for about 3 sec if you spritz carb cleaner into the throat of the manifold and apply the choke.

Does it have good suction ? With the elbow pipe off and the palm of your hand over the end of the carburetor , can you feel a strong suction ?

Usually I can keep a motor running with a spray bottle of gas or a can of starting fluid if it is a fuel problem .

If not it is usually spark or timing . The suction would be a good indicator on the timing of the valve opening/closing at the right time .

How about the valve clearance ? Probably not the problem but if they are too tight the compression will not build up enough to explode .

Last thought , burn off the spark plugs . Some times fouled plugs look good but if three are not sparking then it will only run a few seconds .
