Starter only engages for a second, need a new bendix?

'52 8n side mount. Original 6 volt system.

Lately, when I go to start it, the starter turns the motor over once, then the starter "spins" and does not engage the flywheel anymore. Luckily the motor starts easily so I just have to bump the starter button a couple times and it will finally start on the first revolution. It is annoying waiting for the starter to spin down though.

I'm told I need a new bendix spring for the (original 6 volt) starter, as these things wear out.

Before I go and buy a new bendix, is there something else I should be looking for? I know there are no flat spots/missing teeth on the flywheel as I recent re-timed the tractor and suffice it to say, I've seen every inch of the flywheel, and it looks good.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

the old bendix kick out fast.

as soon as the engine coughs once they will do that.

ensure she is in top shape.. tuned up.. etc.

if bendix still kicks out too much.. get a newer follow thru clutch style.

Chris........make certain yer Bendix is SQUEAKY CLEAN. Spray it with BRAKE cleaner and straw. You can leave it in the tranny and it will drain out the cotter-keyed drain hole and not harm ennythang. It has 'nuttin' to do with yer flywheel ...but... while you have yer starter semi-removed, (1/2" is fine) WIRE BRUSH the gap for improved grounding and FASTER starter rumpa-rumpas ........grounded Dell

Thanks for the replies. I'll clean it up and see if that helps. The tractor runs really well. My '51 8n runs pretty rough and I am used to the bendix popping out when it coughs while starting. This is a new issue on my '52. It was popping out really quickly, like within a second or so.
