Just opened this up....got it in the mail to overhaul this A.M.!!!!

Half full of water...frozen main fuel adj needle...gasket non-existing, half of the float fell out when opened.

Owner says he has a couple more for me to do!?? I DID tell him to send me the rustiest carb, and that I would try to fit it into the schedual!!!

Think this one is gonna give me a little trouble! It's in the soak can, and I'm NOT gonna even try it for about 3-5 days soak!!!

Then we'll see what happens.

I'll keep ya up-dated as time goes on!!!!!

Gary

The one we took off the 51 we are rebuilding was about as rusty, we eventually ended up using the works toilet bowl cleaner, and a little brush, took the rust completely!

Wow, Gary, what a mess. You sure like a challenge!

Been meaning to ask, how do you "finish" the outside? Just paint? Clear coat?

Rattle can from ACE/hardware store. After All the passages are cleaned, I put two light coats of 'Wrought Iron', Flat black paint on the outside. Holds up nice, and is resistant to oil, gas, and rust.

I also let the carb set overnight, under a light bulb on the desk, to 'set' the paint.

NO complaints yet, after about 5 yrs of doing it this way, with not ONE return on any overhauls.

AND.....NO.....Sandblasting will not stop any carb overhaul, from working properly, if the overhaul is done right and the passages are cleaned completely out.

Sandblasting is a NO-NO?????? ..........That is an 'OLD-WIVES' type tale.

Just got to know how to do it RIGHT!!!!

Agree, an old-wives is a good assessment. I have bead blasted old M/S carbs as well as others for decades with no problems resulting from doing so. One word of caution when so doing is to never blast the 1/4 X 40 threads for the main needle or the needle might quickly pop out upon starting the engine!

The only issues I've experienced with sandblasting is when the tiny little particles of sand get lodged in the orifices of the jets, and that really is not an issue either because those jets SHOULD have been removed before going to the blast cabinet.

Quoting Removed, click Modern View to seeThere are smaller drilled passages in those M/S carbs than the jets! And impossible to see, as opposed to the jets, which you can see. You can & should probe all of them. I do, Gary does, etc.

Hey Guys-
The best method to get all that crud dissolved is to let everything soak in white vinegar, completely submerged, for at least two weeks. Check on level every few days as it may evaporate. The majoroty of rust and dirt will dissolve but you will still need to go thru with a brass brush or old toothbrush. Rinse good in mineral spirits bath or let soak for a few days in carb cleaner and then proceed to go through teh fine passages. Don't drill out any orrifices or you muck up the whole thing. Use compressed air to blow off frequently. Sandblsting is a no-no or at laest a last resort -you can easily get a grain of sand wedged in a passage -fine hole is only 1mm in diameter. I have done basket cases and the carbs are back in service today...

Do you recommend a particular carb kit and supplier?? I'd like to try my hand at rebuilding the one from my 8N parts tractor.

Thanks,

Mike

Beautiful work and glad to see someone else with O.C.D. I built several Stearman aircraft and remember on the cowling that EVERY screw head had to be lined up perfect and every rib stitch just like the one before it. Laying out tools was done in the same manner-----wish i could throw them in a bucket and go for it. It really is not fun , honest.

This is the one that really gave me fits!!! ....:

Scraped, poked, and Dremal brushed,..then blasted it inside and out, took about 5 days....:

Taken the day I started putting it back together.....:

Last I heard...it was still on the owners "N"....still running!!! That was sometime around 11/2 yr. ago!!!

Never have tried electrolisis bath. Scared some kid or animal would fall in it!!! Got no place to set it up indoors, under lock and key!!!!

I'll stay with what I know works good!!!
