When to start my 8n other morning and the tractor wouldn"t start. Heard a humming coming from the starter selanoid.I could actually feel the selonoid vibrating. I disconnected the batery cables & cleaned the ground. Now when I hook up the cables the starter engages and the engine turns over. All while the positive terminal is sparking. I disconnected the cables and though I would get some input from you folks. Thank you.

WJ,
Clean and thoroughly check cables ends for tightness. Something sounds loose. How good of shape are the cable ends?
Hope this helps.

Sounds like the solenoid is stuck. Tap on it to see if it unsticks. A new one I bought just did that recently. It quit after a few times. HTH

Spins as soon as you hook the cables up, not pushing the button?
Seen that a couple of times.
Your solenoid could be stuck, the vibration would be the contacts chattering.
See if there is a button on the bottom that you can push to engage it manually.
If so, pushing it and releasing it a few times may un-stick it.
You could also try a light rap on the side with a screwdriver handle.
That sticking could have been caused by the bad connections you fixed,
now its trying to spin as soon as you hook the cables up.
The arcing and sparking is a bad connection.
Since they were loose it probably didn't charge the battery well either, so
charging it up would probably be a good idea.

WJ,
I have taken apart a solenoid on my 2N. I had trouble with it contacting and starting consistently. It must have been the original because the contacts were made of copper. The actual mechanism was not exactly precision fitting.
It consisted of a copper disc being pushed into two contacts which carried current to the starter. With that being said, maybe it "slipped a disc" and is making constant contact. Maybe this will help explain your situation. I reassembled the solenoid and it works like a charm.

Weak battery caused the solenoid to weld it self closed so yep you hook the battery up and starter spins. Tap on the solenoid and see if it pops free or replace it with the correct solenoid

Johnnie........you complain......."Now when I hook up the cables the starter engages and the engine turns over"........yer 8N's starter solenoid is operated by GROUNDING the little middle terminal with the BIG thumb button by the tranny shifter. You have SHORTED yer 1-wire from the starter middle terminal that goes to the BIG push button. The BIG push button is spring loaded OPEN and seldom gives problems ...but... yer starter wire is susceptible to smashing by yer BIG CLODHOPPERS as you climb up into the saddle. Usually where the #14 stranded wire goes thru the opening at the bottom of the sheet metal dash. Do I haffta tell you to inspect and replace yer starter solenoid wire??? ........Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister
