Steam/smoke radiator cap

Got the 1949 8N out today after sitting most of the summer. Coolant level just right - not overfilled, oil good. Run bush hog for maybe 30 minutes and white smoke / steam coming from radiator cap and brown gunky stuff spewing out. Shut it down quick and have it outside shop right now. Is the head gasket blown or do I need to flush the radiator? Should I do a compression test first? Quite a bit of the little white goldenrod seeds all over radiator (and in my lungs).. Can clean them off/out but they will just get back on there quick with as much as I have to cut.

Idears?

If the air-side of the radiator is plugged with dirt and grass trash you may only have to blow out the radiator fins/tubes with an air gun , blowing in the opposite direction to fan-air-flow. Check the oil to see if contaminated with water and if not, and it runs OK after cooling down, I would fill it with coolant again and run it some more.

My dumb question for the day - how do I check if the oil is contaminated with water - drain some off or check the dipstick?

Oil with water in it will be milky or foamy. Or let the tractor sit overnight and just barely open the drain plug. Do not remove it. If there is water in there it will be on the bottom and come out first (assumes you are not parked on a slope).

I'd guess that the chances are 7 out of 10 that you just overheated it when the fins got clogged.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it's overheating w/o the clogged fins.

HINT: get a screen for the radiator.
