About to try and install some .040 sleeves using the dry ice method.
Do I need to use a lubricant on the sleeves ?
If so, what lubricant ?
Thank You !

Had the same question!

The folks at Advanced Sleeve in Concord, Ohio
indicated that a press fit lubricant is highly recommended when installing dry sleeves.

Avanced Sleeve recommended Sunnen Press Fit Lubricant, PN B-200.

This lubricant can be found at "Goodson"
at www.goodson.com who R suppliers for professional engine rebuilders.

Making sure my engine rebuilder has this lubricant.

If you use dry ice you won't need anything to install the sleeves. They will fall in the hole.

I use liquid propane. I just wrap the sleeve in a heavy cloth covering the bottom especially and pour in liquid propane useing a fitting I bought to fill small propane tanks from the BBQ grill size tank. Just turn it upside down and open the valve to direct the flow of liquid propane into the open end of the sleeve till it is good and frosted.

Propane is very combustable so be outside and a long way from any source of ignition. Spark etc.

If you check, most of the aersol paint cans are now using propane for the propellant.

The Rust-o-leum cans generally have a green marble for the rattle. So, when the can is empty, invert the can and cover with a wrag and poke an ice pick into the bottlm of the can. Careful with the cigars. Then cut out the bottom and retreive the GREEN marble for your chinese checker set. :)

Found the dry ice method.
Obtain 1 gallon of Keytone , 5 lb of dry ice (solid CO2) & 2 gallon steel bucket.

Pour the 1 gallon of keytone in the steel bucket
then add the 5# dry ice to the keytone.

This mixture will be minus 110 degree F

Now place the sleeve in the keytone/dry ice mixture for 2 minutes.

The sleeve will shrink in diameter .003" according to a simple formula.
The maximum interference fit for a 3 3/16"
sleeve is .002" according to "Advanced Sleeve" in Ohio.

Therefore, the sleeve will clear the hole by .001" ,which is sufficient to easly install the sleeve with wood block and a ball peen hammer.
