Short in breaker plate?

52 8N side mount.

Someone on forum has mentioned "short in the breaker plate" of distributor.

Please explain what/how and how to check for short in breaker plate of distr.

Breaker plate screws into distr. Seems to be metal-to-metal contact all around the breaker plate.

Points are screwed into breker plate. Seems to be metal-to-metal contact between metal of points and the metal breaker plate - not only with screws, but actual base contact.

Thanks for explaining what ya mean. Ya will, won't ya? Smile.

ot in your side mount distributor. That problem is associated with front mount breaker plate. However, the front mount does have a potential shorting point in its distributor housing (not breaker plate). The insulated screw through the housing wall can deteriorate & short to wall of distributor sometimes.

Where the points wire goes through the distributor housing is insulated with a thin piece of paper like insulation that sometimes fails.

You can buy what is called a "pig tail" wire that has a lump in it to insulate where it goes through the distributor housing to replace the screw stud and insulation stuff that was original or you can just run a length of wire to the points and put a dab of silicone glue where the wire goes through the distributor housing.
The older Ford car distributors that carried points used the "pig tail"

Thanks!

I did have a short where the screw goes thru side of distr. Replaced screw, bushing, copper tab - which included a thin piece of paper for insulating inside of distr. Not worth a crap. I put a plastic washer behind the scrap paper and have good voltage to the copper strip.

However when I connect the copper tab to the new points (screw) and new condensor - I have no voltage (with points open).

Next step is to remove condensor contact to points screw and check again.
