Guessing at rim history/damage

Cleaning up this rim center to repaint it and noticed this gouge.
Not a big deal, I was just wondering what may have caused it.
It had MANY layers of paint over it, and was rusted in the original coat.
If it were a concentric circle I would assume possibly something
sticking out from the tractor with the rim mounted dished out.
But as you can see, its nearly circular most of the way around but not a perfect circle.
Its also too deep/sharp to be just a chain hanging down/swing type of rub.
By the end of the weekend I'll have it all fixed up and never see that scratch again,
so this isn't something I absolutely have to have an answer to, I'm just curious.
Anyone have an idea as to what may have caused it?
Is it about the right distance to be pie weights?

(quoted from post at 22:53:07 11/08/12) That isn't an original 8N rear wheel center disk. Just thought I'd let you know.
Actually, I think I bought this one from a guy that took it off a Fergy TO-20.
But I'm curious what in the pictures made you point that out?

The wheel disk in the picture is scalloped around the edge. Original 8N wheels disks are round. That would make this either a Ferguson center disk (like you said) or a replacement center disk.

wheels set all the way in and
then driving too close to a tight barb wire fence,
or open gate metal rail,
would be my guess

rub damage, that could be a lot of things pipe fence barbed wire ect, it may be weights too which would explain the vertical gouge where they were removed and drug down the rim when loosened , had that on my jubilee rim from a pipe and pole fence rail , sand it down and give her some paint

Something attached to the tractor or lift broke or became dislodged, swinging against the wheel center while the tractor was moving.

All back together and ready to go on the tractor.
Turned out pretty good I think.
What looks like marks on the lower left are reflections of the outer rim.
