2N Govenor oil

Just took ownership of a 1944 2N. Am fixing it up and learning as I go. The Govenor had been welded inside and out and the gear wabbled so it got replaced. There was no oil supply line on the old one which may account for its needing to be welded inside and out. Did the 2Ns have an oil line? If so how was it routed? Greatful for any advice.
 
DavidJB,The early 2Ns did not have an oil line from the filter return to the rear of the governor.They were lubed by splash from the timing gears and crank oil slinger.My 43 has ran since new with no governor problems.Years ago it ran 60 hours a week in spring and summer months.

Makes me wonder why they started putting oil lines on later versions. Yours did well for years but old Henry was reputed to be cheap. There must have been problems with them running dry. Any thoughts?
 
I have two that didn't have the oil line from the factory.
One still does not have it, the other had it added before I got it.
I've never had any trouble with either govenor.
I don't know why they were added, but I would guess there was a particular
set of circumstances where it was problematic justifying the improvement.
 
David,I think the line was added sometime in 1945.It went from the bottom of the oil filter around the front of the engine and hooked to the back side of the governor.I think that some had governor wear so they added the oil line,Mine has a nova or novi brand governor on it.
 
Thanks Den, I think I"ll take that old one apart and look for flat balls or other signs of wear. If I find any then maybe I"ll retrofit a line. Otherwise, if it ain"t broke. . .
