Been a while since I"ve been on here. When My Father passed away a few months ago, I got his "52 8n, I love it, wont ever get rid of it, but it wont start after sitting for at least 3 years. What are the basics I should do to get it going? I"ve got the old gas out, my charger tells me I need a new battery, I"ll do that, but, is there anything I should do or look for after it sitting so long? This has the sherman trans in it if that makes a difference. Thank you.

KRH/MO........you might gitt lucky and don't need a carb rebuild. I'd try without the rebuild first. It should be intuitively obvious, 5-gals of NEW FRESH hi-octane gas. Why? 'cuz it don't have none of that carb jet cloggin' ethyl alcohol additive. Definitely need to "polish" the invisible corrosion from between the points. I use a clean $1-bill clamped between the points and pull. Iff'n yer really cheap, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that. Definitely, re-charge yer 6-volt battery. Sparkplugs are cheap, recommend NEW AutoLite 435's gapped 0.025". Don't pull yer choke knob until after 2-rumpas. Then a QUICK pull and release the spring loaded choke while still crankin' the engine. ........Dell

just to throw in my two cents i would say check the air filter and air tube to the carb for any blockages such as wasp nests, mouse nests, etc.

check for fuel flow to the carb but also through the carb by removing the plug in the bottom of the carb. with the fuel on no more than two turns open it should be a steady stream. one of the three brass screens may be clogged after sitting so long.

check the condition of the plug wires and make sure they are in the correct firing order, 1243(with 1 being nearest the radiator) although it would probably start even if one was switched.

x2 on that!

Spark, Fuel, Air. I fixed my weak spark problem, and it still wouldn't start. Fuel was good (good flow through the bolt on the bottom of the carb). That left Air. Popped open the air cleaner, and it started fine. The cleaner got a good cleaning, and now all is good.

Sitting that long the most likely thing to be wrong is the points need cleaned and or replaced. Is it a front mount or side mount distributor?? One is a lot easier to work on then the other but both not all that bad. I also see by your handle that your likely to be in Missouri. I am at the Lake of the Ozarks

for s&g, clean points, unhook vreg bat contact and field, pull plugs.. dump a couple tablespoons of atf down each hole and let set.. clean plugs.. block clutch, place in neutral, after blocking tires.. roll engine over a bit manually.... .. use a jumper cable and your truck battery and run engine over with plugs out to expell oil.. put plugs in..

try to start her.. use start fluid f needed.

make sure to check oil and water first.

she just might start up...

if so.. watch oil pressure.. if it don't come up in a few seconds.. shut down.. pull large oil plunger relief plug on front of engine.. don't loose spring.. dump in a few oz of thick oil down the hole.. slamp in and restart.. oil should pickup...
