That noise is coming from the solenoid, not the starter. The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by: 1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49)) 2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections) 3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41) 4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36) If you are confident that you have attended to these likely causes, then jump the solenoid. A lot of times the trouble is just dirty connections, or a sticky bendix. You can have it tested at any good local starter shop.   [Reply]  [No Email]

I just installed new cables today (bought from this web site), I have checked all of my grounds and see no problem there, and now all I get is a "click-click- click". Prior to installing the new cables (I had previously put new ones on I bought from a local parts store) and had a lot of trouble getting good cranking power.   [Reply]  [No Email]

A bad solenoid or a bad starter. To test the starter you can jumper around the solenoid as in the 2 bog posts make sure it is out of gear if you do that. If it is a bad solenoid the starter should spin if a bad starter you should get sparks but no engine turn over and same with a weak battery   [Reply]  [No Email]

Sand it so there is metal to metal and no rust or paint. That is where the grounding point is. You can jump the starter with a battery and cables ( Make sure it is out of gear) by touching one jumper to the big stud on the top front of the starter and ground the other cable to the frame. Make sure it is out of gear.. It should turn the starter. Make sure it is out of gear. It can run over you!! Don't ask me how I know. Good luck. DON TX   [Reply]  [No Email]
