I haven't been around the computer much for the last few months so I was looking back over the last several weeks posts to see what I misssed and read a fellows post asking how to rewire a N to start with a key switch only. My wife is a church Organist and quire director she plays every sunday as well as weddings and funerals last spring she played for a funeral a 40yr old man she knew from church he had a wife and a young daughter. He was standing next to his tractor and reached up to start it it was in gear and ran over him his wife was right there and tried to save him breaking her arm in the process. I wish I was able to chime in when the post was written but was glad to read other members changed his mind and he was going wire it correctly. |

| | Flembo, I have a 2N... assuming you have roughly the same??? If you can, I recommend you get that NEW neutral lockout switch "9N-11450-B" if it needs replacing. If you do not like all the starter current going through it, get a solenoid mounted on top the starter to save the life of the Neutral Safety Switch. Then the safety switch just carries the solenoid coil current :-) HTH Greg |

| Let's not forget either that there may be people that recently acquired their first tractor that may not even know that it will only start normally when in neutral.
I don't remember if I was actually told of this when I purchased my 8n or not. I may have read about it when I purchased all the manuals that people here recommend.
I do remember one time while working on my dirt road that I tried to restart it and it would not start. It quickly came to mind that I had it in gear. At least I was in the drivers seat so even if it did start in gear I just would have been a little surprised.
What I'm saying is that the neutral safety switch is there for a reason and it worked like it should have in that instance for me. I'm willing to bet that there are other members here that got reminded of how that safety switch works, hopefully with no bad results as in my case.
Luckily the way it works is that the switch will not push down if you have it in gear. That way you know instantly what is wrong and don't start looking for electrical problems all over the place.

| This can happen if you jumper the starter as well. It happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I was lucky. It was in idle and had a bunch of stuff in front of it to stop and stall it. I turned my back to the rear wheel and rested on the fender to keep the rear tire from pulling me down. I wasn't familiar with the tractor enuff to reach for the kill switch and was busy trying not to get caught in the wheel. Had it not stalled and had room, not sure it wouldn't have hurt me. I rested for a few minutes after that. HTH DON TX |
