Tearing down 8N449385 and when I got out my sleeve puller kit that I got from TOH the removal bushing was very loose in the bore. I new the tools were okay as this would have been the 3rd engine I used them on. I cleaned off the top of one of the pistons and it was stamped .060. I've never used the welding method to remove sleeves but it looks like a may need to try it on this one. I believe I've read that I need to weld three beads vertical in the sleeve. Is that correct?

Ok, I was assuming you had a puck that had the full OD for the .090 sleeves. That smaller OD wouldn't get it, probably just wedge itself tightly inside.

I have two blocks that have aftermarket sleeves installed , which is not uncommon for a machine shop to have done especially on a thin sleeve blocks during the '60 - '70's .

The O.D. is slightly larger than a .090 sleeve , so removing them would not gain anything and add more work .

John Smith8N said: (quoted from post at 14:37:11 11/05/12) I'm not seeing the problem. I don't have a TOH puller set, but I imagine you're using a stepped hockey puck in the bottom of the sleeve to pull it. The puck does all it's pulling on the outside edge and your OD hasn't changed. Just eyeball the puck on center and pull the oversize sleeve. If you can't see or feel when it's centered, wrap a couple of rounds of duct tape on the puck's smaller id. That should take up the .060 overbore space.

The OD of his "hockey puck" is 3.265 which works for both .040 and .090 wall sleeves. The ID of his old sleeves is 3.187+.060=3.247 and the "puck" will surely slip off center and wedge inside if he tries to use it. I do provide an extra "puck" with 3.365 OD to fit the ..090 wall block bores in the newer kits and that one would work fine since the block bore will keep it centered. Might want to consider "upgrading" Mark - that's one you would have a future use for.

The kit TOH makes uses the same bushing for the thick sleeves and thin sleeves. Because of the sleeves having .030 cut out of them all the way around I would have less than .010 contact all the way around which I don't feel would be enough contact.

What I have done is figure out OD of sleeve for a particular engine and then what size pistons were offered for that engine with the OD being the same for all. Now I make steps in the puck so it will fit 1 or 3 different size pistons.
One puck I have fits 3 3/16, 3 1/4 and 3 5/15 pistons.

If you are 110% positive it has a sleeve TOH can make you a puck to remove it... If it were me it would go to a machine shop and have them bored it out to be on the safe side... How sure are you it has a sleeve....

100% It has thick sleeves that have been bored for .060 pistons which would leave about .060 thick sleeves.I will either try the weld method or have TOH make a new bushing. I'm leaning towards the weld method as I may never use a .060 bushing again.

mhb.........yeah, just scab at least 3-beads top-to-bottom to shrink the sleeve. No LAW sez you can't use 4-or-5 beads. Important thing, don't WELD thru the sleeve. .........welder Dell

Thanks Dell, the sleeves should still be roughly .060 thickness so it shouldn't be too bad.
