Last summer I scraped about an acre of old gravel down to the base, then put new gravel down. Grass is now sprouting up through the gravel. What can I use to keep the grass from coming through. I used some premixed roundup, but it did not work. I have a 115" deep well about 20 feet from the lower area, so do not want to contaminate that. Thanks

The roundup I have used recently seems to take a much longer time to knock back the vegetation - at one time i thought it was not working then gradually the plants turned yellow and died off - and, they did not come back at all - maybe give it a shot with round up and just be patient for it to do its work.

Vinegar is what I use. About a shot glass of detergent to a gallon of Cider Vinegar. Spray it early in the morning when it's going to be hot and dry and the grass will be dried up by the afternoon. I also use it around trees and on landscaping around the house. Since it isn't poison it wont hurt any plantings as long as you don't get it on the leaves. If the weeds are established with a good root system it may take several applications.

Vinegar will work, too, but is probably too expensive for large areas.

Ken,
Grass doesn't grow in gravel. Grass grows in the dirt between the gravel. Get rid of the dirt and you'll get rid of the grass. You can throw any chemical you want at it, the grass will come back sooner or later.

Put new rock on the road and sooner or later dirt will get in the gravel.

There is an upside to growing grass in the drive. One, you are less likely to have pot holes. The grass will hold the rock in place.

Two, you are less likely to remove rock when you remove the snow in the winter.

I know a church that has about 3 inches of loose rock. No grass there, but kids will do donuts in parking lot throwing rocks all over the place. Can't keep the parking lot level.

So what's wrong with a little grass in your drive? Is it just the looks that bothers you?

George

This is not my driveway, but an area in front of my shop. I spent alot of money on gravel, and it does look bad. I had scraped it with my box blade before the new gravel, but not enough. This was grass that had grown up on the old pit run gravel. I do not drive on it enough to keep it down. I do not have grass on my driveway, as we drive on it enough, and I grade it.

My dog is pretty good at killing grass. Want to borrow him for a week or two?

I use the glyphosate as well, mixing 2 oz per gallon of water, making sure to spray the green vegetation when no rain is predicted or it will do no good. Sometimes it takes a week or two before results, but it works for me. By the way, I paid $35 last spring for that same jug. Big difference now.

I use "Quick Pro" it's a Round up product I get from Tractor Supply store.
73.3% Glyphosate add one 1.5 oz. per gallon
Five packs for around $17.00 bucks works for about six months. It comes in a green and white box.
My driveway going down to my wood shop was almost overgrown with weeds and grass so I used the loader bucket and back dragged all of the gravel with the teeth then smoothed it out with the back blade did this back in May and just re did it about two weeks ago

I use glyphosate concentrate (generic Roundup) - one application in the spring and a second in late summer. Never had a problem with my shallow (650') well ;-)

Use Pramitol or Prometron, they're both good total vegatation killers that will last all year. It's used in junkyards and oil fields and under asphalt.

I use a vegetation killer that kills everything (grasses and weeds). When you spray it do it on a calm day because you don't want to kill the grass along the drive way.

I went down to HD, and they had a grandular product called Noxall. It showed it over gravel. It says it will last for a year, and kills vegetation. Has anyone used it.

I have never seen it in our area. Sounds like it would work and no worry about over spray like liquid sprays.

Like SG, I've used old filled tires drain. lasts quite awhile.

Things grow good here, my driveway and trails are always fighting grass.

dragging a landscape rake around weekly (or more) keeps it in check.

rake works best on fine gravel, the gravel rubbing together shreds the grass well.

I also scavenge old carpeting and use it as a gravel underlay, or just lay it where I park tractors. lasts 5 years or so

Bingo.

Dumping the CaCl solution from tractor tires into gravel driveways, etc., will keep vegetation away for several years depending upon the amount used.

Drained my 2N rears into a feeder ditch that goes to the 'main' drainage (60' in 250' slope). Foliage (not foilage) kilt for less than 1 yr. from site-nada beyond. What I'm saying is; cacl is bad stuff, BUT, not that bad. HTH

The problem that I have had with Roundup in spraying an area like that is that it only works for a short time. So you have to spray it five or six times per year.
I had good results this year with Bayer DuraZone Weed and Grass Killer (up to 6 months protection). I got at least 4 or 5 months weed free on some gravel areas at the farm.
Monsanto may have some similar extended control products available.

'Mix your own' Roundup is fairly safe (and you can 'up' the dosage). I spray and pick the stuff out of my drive/parking area (lots of time on my hands). Check with your local landscape folks, they may have a solution. HTH

P.S. that stuff grows better than new seed, trying to figure a way to transplant it. Mostly it is wanting our gravel to be 'pristine', almost not worth the effort.
