Water pump back plate with off set "ear"

Sorry to start a new thread for this but have not been able to get any replies from previous post.

I'm trying to get my tractor back together. I'm installing a new fan and water pump. There is a back plate with an off set 'ear' that was already on the tractor and a new one came with the new pump. I don't see any need for this back plate since I have an alternator that does not require this plate to mount. Does this plate serve any purpose other than to mount an old generator? If I don't use the plate, I will have an extra eighth inch clearance between the fan blades and the radiator overflow tube. right now the blades are barely rubbing the tube.

If I don't use the plate, I just use a regular "smiley face" gasket between the pump and block?

Getting an answer to this one question has been holding me up. I can't find a single reference to this on Google, other than a listing for the part.

Thanks!

Ken

That ear is for late model tractors with side mount distributor. if you remove the back plate I thing the pump will leak.

(quoted from post at 14:42:17 11/02/12) How do your belt pulleys line up?

They line up perfectly with the plate in there. Not sure if 1/8 inch would make much difference one way or the other.

Ther plate is required.

The fan should not touch the radiator nor be within 1/8" with or without plate. Something is wrong.

The ear is only used with the generator mounted on the left side. All N water pumps have the plate on the back.

I got it all put back together, with the plate installed, and no leaks!!
With no pressure tester it would have been a real pain to reassemble the hood/fuel lines, etc. in order to start the tractor and then finding a leak and having to pull the hood again.

Once I got everything reassembled I ran it with straight water for a while to check for leaks, then added a bottle of coolant system cleaner and drove the tractor up and down the road for a while to get it good and warm. Then I flushed it all out and refilled with 50/50 antifreeze.

Looks like I'm good to go!

Cheers!
