I stopped and looked at a tractor that had a for sale sign on it. The sign read ..1948 8N $2000.
It looked good and I had a trade in mind for it til I noticed something.
It had the brake pedals on opposite sides, and they were round rod type instead of the flat ones like my 8N is. Also no flat running boards for foot rests. It was a 3 speed trans and the instrument panel and steering gear were differnet than the later models. I went inside and talked to the guy that was selling it and he was addament that it was an 8n and a 48 model at that. He also aid it was the original engine which eliminated my argument that it was a 2N or 9N with 8N engine and serial number. It had the older style wheels too, but had new rubber all around. I have an 8N, 2 of em in fact and that ain"t like mine. What distinguishes the 2N from the 9N?

You noted all the differences and it is a 9N. I had a simalar argument with a gentlemen and he proved I was wrong by producing the bill of sale stating it was an 8N. I told him the bill of sale could say it was an elephant but it was still a 9N. Some people just want hear the truth.

Yep, 3 speed trans, brakes on opposite sides, 9N or 2N.
Hard to tell a 9N from a 2N in most cases, but there are differences in the
casting numbers and date codes.

yep.. classic ignorant seller.

guy i bought one of my 850's from sold it as an 801

he would hear notheing else. i even showed him the 8-5-0 on the tranny casting. :)

I see that type of thing ALL the timne and have a few auctioneers who have learned to listen when I tell them that what was listed is not what the tractor really is and they then note that when it comes up for bid. Last one was a tractor painted blue with 4000 decals on it but it was in fact a 801/861
