Correct Bolt- Fan to Water pump 8N

The book shows a 1/4 x 5/8- 28 thread bolt.
I need just one and, after looking at three stores can only
find half inch long and 3/4 inch long.
I bought one of each.

With an extra washer the 3/4 inch bolt should be just right.
OR the 1/2 inch bolt is exactly the right length without a washer.

Which way should I go?

Thread a nut onto the longer bolt, cut to proper length, chamfer the end on a grinder and remove the nut to chase the threads.

Dean

As Dean says put a nut on the bolt clamp it in a vise so the nut is right where you need to cut it off at so you have a mark to go by cut it off and work the nut off part of the way and back on a couple times to clean up the tread and then install it. Easy as pie

(quoted from post at 15:30:57 11/01/12) ditto.. size the 3/4 to 5/8 and clean that first thread..

I found plenty of clearance between the back side of that bolt plate and the belt pulley groove. I could probably have gone with another half inch longer bolt if necessary.

Cheers!

" one of each" WOW! What if using the one new one throws the sucker out of balance?? Just pushing your chain. b

" one of each" WOW! What if using the one new one throws the sucker out of balance?? Just pushing your chain. I have a habit of replacing every bolt I take off with SS and a 'smidge' of never seize, costs VERY little extra and if there is a next guy he will appreciate it- looks cool also. b
