1954 Ford NAA

HI,

I have a chance to buy a 1954 Ford NAA that is in very nice shape. It ran a year ago, won't start now, but when I looked at it it cranked over. The owner was told it needs a new ignition switch. She's 70 years old, they are the original owners. The tractor is still 6 volt, was always serviced by a shop, the top end was redone at some point, maybe an overhaul, she wasn't sure. The tires are all good, the metal is all perfect except for a quarter size dent on one of the legs. There's not many leaks that I can see.

My question is what would this tractor be worth or what would be a fair offer. I may be able to get her to get it running, but not sure.

She's asking $1000, I offered $500, she came back with $875. I think there may be some more room to negotiate. What does anyone think?

What's a fair price?

What do you feel about the NAA?

Thanks in advance,
Tony

I like the NAA.
It has live hydraulics, which was a definite plus from the other N's.
I also like the Red Tiger engines that started with the NAA.
If all the tires are good as you say, it probably would have followed me home at $875.
If you can get it for a little less even better as long as you're not taking advantage of her.
It may need a key switch, they were weak. Then again, it may just need the points cleaned.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I'm used to the N's, but really haven't heard much
on the NAA. I didn't think about the red tiger much.

She's a nice old lady, but if she gave me the tractor and gave me $875 I don't think I could bring myself to kiss her, I'll take a hand shake!

I got my 8N in about the same type of deal. Was bought new by a gentleman about 200 yds. from where i live. I was dealing with granddaughter and offered her $500.00 knowing nothing about engine except it had 1000.9 hrs. on it since new. She said $1000.00 and i took it home for $750.00. Battery, points and plugs, all fluid change, one new rear rim,and rewire lights. Runs perfect and lift is perfect. I added pies and fronts since i will use a Woods finish mower on it this coming spring.

I like my Jubilee, and I paid a lot more for it than any of the $$$ you are talking about. If the castings are all OK, and the tin is OK, $1000 is a steal.

You better grab it before someone else does. I bought a '54 NAA from a widow some years ago and paid a lot more than that at auction. Try to start it with ignition switch wiggled back from "fully-on" enough to get a little motion on the amp meter while it cranks on the starter....switches are poor and mine has always been intermittant causing me to observe the amp meter when starting engine.

Spokane Craigs List, 1954 NAA $2500 looks a little rough. I was thinking of giving it a look see, price seems high, but OBO:

NAA's are great little tractors
only real weakness is the 8N style rear hubs.
not a biggie, easy to fix/maintain

as most posters here know, I am
super cheap, I will work for days on something, rather than buy a new part.
But, a NAA and a nice old lady,
I would have paid the 1000 (still a great deal)
or I would have had to take all the
mirrors out of my house...............

When you say if the castings are OK,

Is there something or somewhere in particular I should be checking?

If you're talking about cracks, I assume they will be obvious, not some hard to see hairline??

I'd have given her the $1000 without thinking twice. 'Course, then I'd have had to explain to my wife how that nice tractor followed me home...
