Valve guide seals

I searched, but didn't come up with an answer.

How are you supposed to install the valve guides without tearing the seals?
There is a small sharp ridge all the way around the the top of the valve guide bore, so there is no way to install the valve guide from the top without the seal catching on the lip and getting damaged.
Do I need to grind the lip of this ridge down?
I took some pics, to try to show the ridge. I'll see if I can post them.
In the first pic, you can see the ridge a little better in the one off to the right.

Completely assemble the valve and guide and simply force it down into the guide bore. There will be enough left to do as designed.

Use seals only on the intake guides.

Ok, I can try to do that, but I am not sure if I can get the guide pushed down in there. I put some pretty good pressure on it before (by prying down on the top of the guide by going through the intake port), and the seal just kinda squished.

The thing that confused me, is that I read before where someone said the only place that the seal can catch is where the intake port hole is in the side of the valve pocket. This particular engine is definitely different that what they were stating.

Yep, I'm just putting new seals on the intake guides.

Thanks Zane.

Another thing I didn't consider is that the seals my be totally wrong sized. This imported stuff we are getting is pretty poorly made. I have run into problems with several other parts that have been imported such as the front distributor plate and the front distributor points and the front distributor rotor etc. The count goes on. There seems to be no quality control at Mama's backyard foundry/machine/assembly plant!

The OD of the seals are just slightly larger than the OD of the valve guides. So it appears to me that they are the correct size.

Well, I eventually used a grinding stone and ground that sharp lip down. There was no way those guides were going in without tearing/cutting the hell of of those seals. With the way the seals were bulging, they would have probably got cut down to 1/2 the original OD, and that would have made them useless.
Once the lips were ground down, a little grease and they all slid in relatively easy.
Anyway, they are in, the valves are adjusted, everything is buttoned back up and I fired it up the other night. Seems to run good again.
Now, I just gotta get the oil and sludge cleaned out of the rear end/pump/tranny area, the lift assembly put back together, and the lower lift arm pins tightened up. Then it should be good for another 60 years.
