Two 8n questions

Greetings,
Long time lurker, first time poster.

Picked up a nice 8N last week( ex wife ended up with my old one). Seems to only have one problem (fingers crossed).

When I press the starter it engages, then typically cuts out making a high pitched "Whirring" noise.

-Do I have a bad starter?
-If so, would a rebuild kit fix or do I need a new one?
-Or is it something else?

Know this is probably a simple fix but I've got zilch for mechanical knowledge and ability. Didn't buy manual yet either.

SECOND: Seller just changed oil and used Shell Rotella 15W40. Any problem with that? (fwiw, I'm in central PA).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

HI, welcome to the board.

Sounds like the starter drive is going bad and disengaging too. You can replace that yourself. 15-40 should be good unless you get real cold and are going to use it in the cold.

"When I press the starter it engages, then typically cuts out making a high pitched "Whirring" noise."

The noise is the starter spinning after the bendix prematurely disengages.

You can pull the starter, check the shaft & clean it up (no lube).

If that doesn't work, pull the starter (see tip # 36) & replace the bendix.

The oil is fine.

ditto what bruce said.

the starter drive kicked out. the odler drives do that.. especially if the engine coughs once and don't start.

clean up the drive and do a tune up.

if she still does it and bat cables are good and she spins fine but kicks out.. repalce with a new followthru drive..

6 or 12 volts that can help us help you. Front or side mount distributor?? That to is info needed. If the timing is off that can happen as can the spark being poor. Low compression can also be an issues that can cause things like that

Wow, you guys are quick, thanks for the input.

Glad to hear the oil should be okay, I thought non-detergent oils were best in this case.

Re the starting issue, 6V, front mount distributor, sorry.

New distributor, tractor seems to run just dandy when it starts. BTW, didn't do a compression check but no smoke, no bad engine noises. Sweet.

Think I'll:
1) Change the battery, can't find any punch date sticker and don't have a 6V charger yet but sure can't hurt. Gonna try a red-top Optima.

2) If no cure, will clean the shaft as suggested, Bruce thanks for #36.

3) If no cure, will proceed with other suggestions. Gotta buy manual. Have a great neighbor next door (who had six show tractors) in case I need a hand.

My lane is about 3/8 mile, gonna find a blade and get ready for snow.

Thanks again for all the input. Any more just fire away!

toddo........starter bendix drive must be SQUEEKY CLEAN. I use spray BRAKE cleaner.

2nd thing, yer starter must be GROUNDED. Remove the 8" bolts and pull the starter out about 1/2". Now WIRE BRUSH the H3LL outta the gap. Now re-install the 8" bolts. Simple, eh?

Would it surprize you to learn that Ford spec'd 30wt DETERGENT oil in 1939??? Synthetic oil is also highly detergent. .........oily Dell
