Rlpintx 10-29-2012 19:43:38 71.113.246.28 Report to Moderator	I went out to help brother in law with his 9n that he wanted to load. I don't have a manual handy and forgot that 9Ns or a bit different than 8ns. It has been converted to 12 volt and it is getting power to the starter but the starter is doing nothing. Thinking its the plunger switch or the starter itself but it was rebuilt a year ago maybe a little more. Can someone remind me how the starting systems are different and give me some tips on what to check to get this thing to start again. We did get it to start by pulling it and it runs just fine. soundguy 10-30-2012 06:23:54 184.246.191.76 Report to Moderator	Re: 9N will not crank in reply to Rlpintx, 10-29-2012 19:43:38   ditto what the others said. the plunger on the trans top merely presses a switch via linkage. that is just a high current start switch. like crowbaring across the contacts. if the starter is in fact getting power.. and not spinning.. check starter, bat cables, bat or contacts. If power actually to terminal on starter motor, then switch must be working. Then check motor housing to ground (rust/paint/corrosion at mating surface to engine) and whack it with hammer with power applied to disturb stuck or worn out brushes. Also check loose cable connections or dirty connections or bad cables(usually at terminal ends). [Reply]  [No Email]
Royse 10-29-2012 19:55:16 69.36.49.151 Report to Moderator	Re: 9N will not crank in reply to Jerry/MT, 10-29-2012 19:43:38   The 9N, if they used the original neutral safety push switch when they converted it to 12 volts, has a mechanical push button switch as opposed to a solenoid. If you are getting power to the lug on top of the starter, that is at least making contact. If it is in fact battery voltage at the starter lug, not something less, I would look for a bad ground to the starter. You could try grounding the starter case to the frame with one lead of a pair of jumper cables and see if it will crank normally then. Bad connections are a major culprit. Both ends of each battery cable, the area where the starter case meets the bell housing, etc. If you have battery voltage to the starter, and ground it and it still won't crank I would have the starter tested.
